After just short of twenty years working as a policeman in central London I, Peter McKinley, found my itchy feet were too hard to control and to be tied down in London, so since 1994 I have made Africa a significant part of my life and my home. It has been an adventure in a way I never expected.
In summary, I started with the UN in Somalia as a field security officer at a time very different to that country’s troubles, but equally exciting for a man in his late 30s. That surreal experience widened when transferred after the UN Mission there closed and went to Angola. Continued there for a few years and landed a position as a security manager with a major oil company. That generally has been my career path since then with various multinational companies and humanitarian organisations generally in southern and eastern Africa.
I have extensively wandered from Angola all the way around the coast to Ethiopia including some inland countries managing the risks for my clients. I study the political landscape from the perspective of ‘risk’ that includes all the geo-political risks, and socio-economic issues and just watch. Watching and talking to people. Too often the person is a barman in a hotel or a taxi driver, but there you get the grassroots feelings.
The last few years have been different. Global economics has affected my life quite dramatically. So I have reset and made some big changes.
I am currently focused on and based in Mozambique.
